Top 7 Cheesy 80's Sit-com Theme Songs
October 20th, 2007
Ah, the 80's...a prosperous time for many, and a golden age of situation comedy. A pre-requisite for any great 80's sit-com was a catchy, mind numbingly optimistic theme song that let you know, no matter what situation our characters found themselves in, everything would be back to normal in less than 30 minutes. So without further ado, we present the top 7 best (worst?) 80's sit-com theme music in no particular order.
Perfect Strangers - Who can forget the antics of the lovable 'Myposian' Balki and his high strung cousin Larry as they tackle the mean streets of the windy city flying "On the wings of their dreams!" Nothing's gonna stop them now! (unless those two blonde stewardesses down the hall happen to stop by...they might just do a dance of joy)
Growing Pains - A very progressive show for its time (hell, they had a character who's name was 'Boner') Growing pains' theme song stuck to the traditional family togetherness motif which dominated TV in the era. Mike Seaver was the cool kid everyone wanted to be whom in later seasons got to 'Bone' actress/model Julie McCullough. Too bad his off screen counterpart Kirk Cameron turned out to be an evangelical moon bat and insist she be fired for posing in playboy.
Family Ties - What do you get when you cross ultra hippy parents with ultra conservative/capitalist kids? 2 million years of family togetherness if the theme song has anything to say about it. Oh, and I call Photoshop® on that family "portrait."
Webster - "It was you, and me and then came... you." It was abundantly clear the Popodopolis Family resented having to care for Emmanuel Lewis' brilliantly acted "Webster." What better way to spend your NFL retirement than chasing after a diminutive orphan who one day burns down your apartment building which forces you to move to the suburbs where your house has a secret passage behind the grandfather clock that leads to a room with a life-size "Real Doll" that you claim is an effigy of the landlords estranged "daughter"...but I digress (yeah, that happend).
Mr. Belvedere - "Life is more than mere survival" Bob Ueckers lackluster baseball career led him into broadcasting, acting, announcing for the WWF and if Futurama has anything to say about it his severed head will last long into eternity... He just might live the good life yet.
Diff'rent Strokes - "Everybody's got a special kind of story, everybody finds a way to shine!" And shine the child start did in their post show lives which lead to pornography, drug abuse, overdose, bankruptcy and death. Gary Coleman is due for a comeback though.
Silver Spoons -
"Together, we're gonna find our way!" The often overlooked Silver Spoons was the jumping off point for the careers of Alfonso Ribeiro and Rick Schroder both of whom are still often overlooked. Come on guys get it together!
