Robert J. Massetti, Fear Film
When you think of independent horror directors' one name that comes to mind is Robert J. Massetti, owner of Fear Films and such horror films as Realms of Blood and Blackout. A couple of months ago I was able to talk to Mr. Massetti and here is that interview for you "dying" pleasure.

What started you on the path to become a filmmaker? Basically, the day I saw the movie "Star Wars" was the day I decided to become a filmmaker. I remember going to the theater and being just lost in my own world with these really cool characters and amazing special FX, thinking to myself that I want to make something that really affects people in a way that this film affected me. But I didn’t want to make sci-fi movies, comedies or even dramas, what I really wanted to make was horror films. Movies that could scare the “crap” out of you, but you still have a blast watching them. Like riding a rollercoaster, your scared, the adrenaline is pumping, and your still having a blast. Since my parents were huge horror fans and I grew up watching a lot of horror films, it was only natural that I would want to become a horror movie director.

What was your reasoning for starting FEAR FILM Independent Productions Inc.?

"At the time I started FEAR FILM in 1999, there wasn't a lot of production companies that focused on making just horror films."
At the time I started FEAR FILM in 1999, there wasn't a lot of production companies that focused on making just horror films. I always thought horror films needed to get some respect and not just be seen as low budget, b-grade T&A films with bad acting, but films that actually had great acting, a great story, and something that could scare you while having fun watching it. So I started FEAR FILM with that goal in mind. I had no idea how I was going to accomplish this goal, but I was going to work hard to make it happen.

What has been your most challenging film to date? When you are trying to make movies with not a lot of money, every film is a huge challenge. What happens is that you are constantly compromising and doing things the cheapest way possible, yet trying to make it look like you’ve spent a lot of money. In that respect, every film I have made has been challenging and will continue to be challenging until we are able to work with decent budgets, and even then you still have challenges. In other words, if you are able to make a movie and finish it, you have really accomplished something. People really have no clue as to what it takes to make even the simplest of movies and if they did, they would have a lot more respect for movies and maybe enjoy them even more.

Fear Film's Robert Massetti directing Blackout What’s in store for FEAR FILM in 2007? A lot. Let me tell you now, since this is my first interview for 2007, this year will be our biggest year ever. In fact, 2007 will our breakout year. So, with all that said, let me tell you what we have in store. First off, the FEAR FILM website is getting a makeover and should be finished by the end of January. We are also in the production of a short film called, "The Thing Under My Bed", which will also be turned into a feature film at some point, which is being made for the new FOX TV Show produced by Steven Spielberg called, "On the Lot". The short will be submitted to the show and then uploaded to TV show’s website at www.onthelot.com where people are able to watch and vote for the film. The best 16 filmmakers are then put on the show airing sometime this spring, so we will see what happens. We hope to have the short completed by the first week of February, so keep an eye out for that. We are also close to locking down financing for the Tim Ritter penned movie "The Truth or Dare Syndrome" which will be directed by myself. The film is based off of Tim’s 1986 movie "Truth or Dare" and we hope to get the film a theatrical release when it’s completed. Hopefully this film will be our big move into the bigger budgeted realm of moviemaking. Plus we are in development of two other movies, one of which people have been hearing about for a while called, "The Woods Are Alive". I also have my own trading card coming out this year through "Terror Cards", which will be a limited edition signature card. Go to www.terrorcards.com for more info. We also have "Screamfest Horror Convention" happening this October along with our new film festival “Freak Show Horror Film Festival” going into it's second successful year. Let me tell you, we are busy to say the least! But it's all good. To keep up to date with everything we are doing, just go to our website at www.fearfilm.com for all the latest.

So what is your dream project? My dream project would be to do a huge budget, epic horror film in the same vein as "Braveheart" or the "Lord of the Rings", but I could settle with just having Elisha Cuthbert starring in one of my films. That would really be my "dream" project.
