The latest film by Roland Emmerich, 2012, whose name has become synonymous with the end of the world films (Independence Day, Godzilla, and The Day After Tomorrow) decimated theaters this weekend with an unprecedented, estimated 225-million-dollar worldwide box-office.

The story is pretty simple…Solar flares are causing the core of the planet earth to heat up. This is in turn causing the Earth's landmasses to become unstable and shift…causing the end of the world. 2012 is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that both brings an end to the world as well as tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.

While 2012 is a film of fiction, the story is actually based on the ancient Mayan calendar, which predicts the world will come to an end December 21, 2012. In fact, there are actually some factions of the world who believe this is actually a prediction that will come true as the planets align for the first time in thousands of years.

As with most films by Roland Emmerich, if you are looking for a deep meaningful, Academy Award winning story, then look elsewhere because most of the time the plot is simply outlandish.

However, 2012 accomplishes what it is exactly intended to, to make you forget the worries of the world for about three hours of your life. This is accomplished skillfully by the amazing cast of actors -- John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, and Woody Harrelson. The jaw-dropping special effects and action sequences will have you on the edge of your seat!

2012 is certainly the next evolution in disaster films and is one that I know I will enjoy for a long time to come…even after the end of the world in 2012.
