The movie centers on the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. When Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris) comes forth with a page from the diary of John Wilkes Booth (Lincolns assassin), it allegedly links Ben Gates' (Nicolas Cage) great-grandfather to the plot. Ben and his father Patrick (Jon Voight) set forth to disprove the document and clear their family name. Ben believes symbols found on the back side of the document contain a cryptic message that leads to a lost city of gold. The adventure begins.
Along with the help of his tech expert Riley Poole (Justin Bartha), and Ben's ex-girlfriend, Abigal Chase (Diane Kruger), they start on an adventure that leads them from Washington D.C. to London, Paris, and to the Black Hills of South Dakota (Home of Mount Rushmore).
The story is action packed, but some of the plot levels may be considered far-fetched. Gates breaks into the Queen's study at Buckingham Palace, manages his way into the Oval Office, and kidnaps the President of the United States from Mount Vernon.
All of the time he is hunted by Wilkinson, and his band of mercenary soldiers. The family is further reunited when Emily (Helen Mirren), Ben's mom and Patrick's ex, joins the team to decipher ancient Native American symbols.
Forced by Wilkinson to find the treasure, Gates and his team dive into the center of the Black Hills to find their fortune. Wilkinson, in the end, admits he just wants to be remembered by history. The city is found, and Wilkinson sacrifices his life, so the others can live.
Overall the movie had a similar tone to the original National Treasure film. Many of the traps, gadgets, and gizmos seem very far fetched, not to mention kidnapping the president so easily. The clues and solutions seemed to come rather also easily compared to the last film. The film was a fun watch, and was filled with many action scenes to keep you on your toes.
Disc 2 contains many behind the scenes documentaries based on the making and creation of the movie.
For those who enjoy Audio Commentaries, both Director Jon Turteltaub and Actor Jon Voight provide interesting commentaries about different aspects of the creation of the movie. Other sections include:
- "On Location" footage; behind the scenes footage that looks at the creation.
- Golden City", and "Knights or the Golden Circle"; the Street Stunts section shows how they created the London car chase. One the most enjoyable to watch was actually in the Deleted Scenes, and the Bloopers and Outtakes. In the Deleted Scenes, director Jon Tuteltaub explains each scene and why it was cut. For me, I think leaving those scenes in would have given the movie more impact. Be sure to watch ALL the scenes, no matter how long they might seem.
Everyone loves to laugh, as does the cast and crew of Book of Secrets. The blooper real is full of zany outtakes and blunders. Watching the blooper reel gives viewers a better understanding of the demand and pressure actors are under, and how they get away with anything.
Disc 2 of National Treasure: Book of Secrets offers a great way to relive the adventure and learn how the adventure was created. --The Gecko
