Thirty-one years ago Star Wars leapt into the theatres and into our lives. After three movies, and two mini-movies about little bears that live in trees (and one television special that would become a bootleg commodity) it would lay dormant for sixteen years when George Lucas decided to complete his story of not Luke Skywalker, but rather his father, Anakin Skywalker who became Darth Vader. While the "prequels" were a commercial success, they were not well received in the Star Wars fan community. I for one did not mind the prequels. In the middle of the prequels, Lucas commissioned a short animated series to address the war we first learned about back in 1977 – the war before the Empire – the Clone Wars. This short series ends at the beginning of the third movie (or 6th, depending on how you keep count) Revenge of the Sith.
After Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas approved plans for a live-action television show (supposedly to bridge the time between Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope and then someone decided to make a new animated series about the Clone Wars. Then, somewhere along the lines, they decided to introduce the new series by converting the first few episodes into a feature length motion picture. Clone Wars is the result.
My son is a Star Wars fanatic. He has played both Lego Star Wars games into the ground, and has even played my old Star Wars: Rebellion game for Windows (released in 1997). He loves his Star Wars Legos and was able to see a sneak peek at this movie when we went to one of the Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios this summer. Should I review this film from my son's point of view? That is a very difficult decision to make. However, this review will be from my point of view.
Clone Wars, to be quite honest, is a departure from the Star Wars films of old. Not just because it's 100% CG, but rather the overall way the movie is presented to the viewer. Gone is the traditional Star Wars fanfare to go with the movie title zooming away on the screen – even the infamous scrolling introduction doesn't make an appearance. We are "brought up to speed" by a narrator. But the differences don't end there.
The battle droids from the prequels were funny – but not intentionally. They were funny because of the way they acted – as mindless robots that can only do as programmed, and to see how they respond when presented with data (or as Johnny 5 would say ‘Input') that is confusing to their programming. (See Qui Gon Jinn's interaction with them in the Naboo hangar early in The Phantom Menace). In Clone Wars, the battle droids have someone obtained artificial intelligence and with it, personalities and intentional humor, which, unfortunately, doesn't fit with the other the movies.
They also chose to introduce a new character to the Star Wars universe, the teenage Jedi student Ahsoka Tano. Okay, I thought, no problem, we could always use more Jedi like the red-shirted security forces of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Except that she's the Padawan of Anakin Skywalker. Anakin had a Padawan? First I heard of it. Ahsoka was apparently assigned to Anakin by Yoda, and Ahsoka has a huge problem with respecting her elders, which may be why Yoda assigned her to Anakin. But they don't explain that in the movie. Perhaps in the show, as she either needs to disappear by the end of the animated series to somehow survive past the Episode III, or be killed during the show, since we won't hear from her in any other movie. But she'll probably show up in the live-action series. Their student-teacher relationship quickly morphs into one where they are both giving each other nicknames – seriously. From all of the other movies, it's clear to me that a proper Padawan would never treat their master the same way Ahsoka does, yet Anakin doesn't seem to mind – and he seems to be encouraging it. Meanwhile, his actions in the movie don't match the way Anakin was acting at the end of Episode II and the beginning of Episode III. It's almost as if this movie is supposed to be in an alternate universe of Star Wars, but it's not supposed to be. I thought this was supposed to be "canon".
Fortunately, if you like action in your Star Wars movies, you won't be disappointed. Battles take place where Lucas never took them before, and it's all thanks to the wonders of CG. The animation style didn't bother me, but it also wasn't anything special either.
In the end, I really didn't like the movie. To me, it was worse than even The Phantom Menace, which I thought was the weakest of the prequels. My son loved it. And to honest, if you're a Star Wars fan, you're going to see this movie. Just don't expect much. And leave your knowledge of the Star Wars universe at home. Maybe that way you will enjoy the movie a little more.--Roger Longenbach
