As a long time fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, I was devastated when it when off the air. The news came along in the entertainment trades, that David Greenwalt, Producer of Buffy and Angel, was going to be in charge of CBS's new vampire series, Moonlight.
Moonlight centers on an "undead" private eye, Mick St. John, who helps the helpless - sound familiar so far? He is a vampire, dwelling in a covert netherworld that is complicated by friendship with an "undead" finance honcho, Jason Dohring, memories of the alluring ex-wife, Shannyn Sossamon, who turned him into a vampire, and a relationship with a human, Sophia Myles, that he feels drawn to protect, and maybe to love. But no matter how tempting, Mick knows a vampire-human romance is eternally dangerous.
The acting by the main cast is a little above average. They speak most of their lines like a bad Soap Opera episode, and the sets look like they were reused from the 1980's hit vampire detective series, Forever Knight.
However, all is not bad in the alternative universe known as Moonlight. Some of the dialog and stories actually do click. Providing some entertainment for the masses, and unfortunately, we didn't get to realize it's full potential of the show due to the unfortunate writers strike of 2007-2008.
Moonlight originally aired on CBS from September 28, 2007 to May 16, 2008, and it averaged 7.8 million viewers per episode; it was #1 in its time slot during most of its run. Episodes contained on the DVD box set are: No Such Thing As Vampires, Out of the Past, Dr. Feelgood, Fever, Arrested Development, B.C., The Ringer, 12:04 AM, Fleur de Lis, Sleeping Beauty, Love Lasts Forever, The Mortal Cure, Fated to Pretend, Click, What's Left Behind, and Sonata.
The video is presented in its original format of 1.78:1 with some great color tones, but also has a high amount of digital artifacts. The sound is the standard 5.1 dolby which does not fully maximize the potential of your home theater system. Extra's on the DVD set are very sparse, in fact none at all, which leaves me wondering if Warner Bros didn't just go through the motions releasing this DVD set and not really put that much time into it.
While the show might have its core audience, it really did not hold that much interest for me. It honestly seemed like a slap in the face to Angel, a show that did everything better, but yet somehow was canceled around the same time as this one was greenlit.
If you are a fan of vampire or detective show, Moonlight, this definitely deserves to be a rental. However, only if you are a cult fan would I suggest sinking your teeth into purchasing this.
