Disney Sues DeSantis Over Free Speech - Ongoing Conflict with Conservative Governor

Disney's lawsuit against Governor DeSantis marks a major escalation in an already-tense relationship between the entertainment giant and the conservative governor. The conflict began when Disney leaders spoke out against a controversial education bill backed by DeSantis and other Florida Republicans. DeSantis was outraged by the criticism and began attacking the company, accusing it of receiving preferential treatment. Since then, the conflict has continued to simmer, with DeSantis seeking to rein in Disney's influence and the company accusing the governor of violating its rights.

The conflict could have significant political and economic consequences for Florida. Disney's resorts are a major driver of tourism in the state, employing more than 75,000 people. However, DeSantis has repeatedly sought to curb the company's influence. In April 2022, lawmakers dissolved a special taxing district created in 1967 to help Disney develop and control its vast property near Orlando. The move raised concerns about what would happen to Disney's tax and debt burden, with some local officials calling it "a $1 billion debt bomb." In February, DeSantis ordered another special session to address the issue, replacing the outgoing Disney board with a new panel. However, members of the new board quickly discovered that the outgoing Disney board had handed over most of their power to the company, prompting them to vote to overturn the deal.

In its legal complaint, Disney accuses DeSantis of punishing the company for exercising its right to free speech, threatening its business operations, and violating its constitutional rights. The company argues that it has been forced to file the lawsuit to protect its employees, customers, and development partners from a "relentless campaign to weaponize government power against Disney." Meanwhile, DeSantis' office has pushed back against the lawsuit, arguing that Disney is attempting to circumvent state law and undermine the will of Florida voters.

Despite the ongoing conflict, it appears to be business as usual at Disney's Florida resorts. Visitors to the parks have reportedly not been affected by the feud, with the conflict largely playing out behind the scenes. However, the conflict could have significant economic consequences for the region, particularly if DeSantis' attempts to curb Disney's influence impact the company's operations or force it to raise prices. Ultimately, the lawsuit is likely to be closely watched by both Disney's supporters and opponents, as well as political observers looking to gauge DeSantis' prospects for a potential presidential run in 2024.
