Beloved Actor Michael Gambon, Known for Dumbledore in 'Harry Potter,' Passes Away at 82

Michael Gambon, best known to millions for his role as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" franchise, has died. He was 82.

In a statement, his family said, "We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside." They added he died following a "a bout of pneumonia."

The actor was born on October 19, 1940, in Dublin, Ireland. He is known for his extensive and acclaimed career in film, television, and theater. Gambon has received numerous awards and nominations for his work, and he is widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation. 

Aside from playing Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series, he also appeared in movies like "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover," "Gosford Park," "The King's Speech," and "The Insider," among others. His role in the "Potter" franchise spanned over 6 films, after repaling Richard Harris, who portrayed the wizard in the first two. 

In addition to his film work, Gambon's distinguished career also took place in the theater, with appearances in various stage productions, including Shakespearean plays. His stage credits include performances with the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
