The Other Guys Theatrical Review
Chris Rebholz8/8/2010 8:14 PM EST
When I first saw the trailer for the other guys I have to admit that I was not very impressed. It looked like your typical buddy cop comedy. From what I could tell it seemed like Will Ferrell was just phoning it in this time around, and honestly the last time I liked Mark Wahlberg in a movie was back in The Departed. So when I went to the movies tonight to check this flick out, I did not have high hopes.
I can say right now that I have been so happy to have been wrong! This movie caught me by surprise and at certain points had me laughing so hard I was literally in tears. And it's been a WHILE since I've laughed that hard at a movie.
To start off the movie is essentially about two cops (Wahlberg and Ferrell) and how Wahlbergs character wishes he was out busting bad guys and getting all the glory. The glory, which at the beginning of the movie, is being focused completely Samuel L Jackson and Dwayne Johnsons characters. Not long into the movie we say goodbye to our hot shot cops (I won't say how or why) and naturally the rest of the detectives are itching to fill the void. From this point we watch as Wahlbergs character drags Ferrell's character around trying to get the glory he so desperately wants. They end up going after a "ponzi scheme" type villain played by Steve Coogan. The last time I saw him was in Tropic Thunder and even though his arc in that movie wasn't that long I found it more enjoyable than this. He is a very funny actor and I look forward to seeing him in more movies, but this time around there just wasn't enough for him to do with this particular character.
As for our two leading men I found that together they played off each other quite well. You laugh at the moments when even with the two of them trying to solve the case they still end being the gullible second banana's that the movie's title suggests. Ferrell has certainly perfected his "innocent doofus" schtick and it works well in this movie. There are a few particular moments where he goes over the top, in a good way, with his brand of comedy. I won't say what happens but watch for the "Lion vs. Tuna" monologue and the scene where Will attempts to reconnect with his wife. Very funny. Wahlberg on the other hand is another story. I felt he was trying too hard to be funny and not letting the situations do some of the work for him. But with that said I wasn't so upset with his performance that it detracted from my viewing enjoyment.
So in the end I would have to say that The Other Guys is a fun, and funny, movie which is worth seeing. Time will tell if it's the funniest movie of the summer but it's definitely the funniest movie so far.

It was at the moment that he realized that he loved movies, and since then Chris has made it a habit of renting movies, going to the movies, discussing his favorite movies, and anything else in between when it comes to that genre. It has been Chris’s passion and hobby for years now and will be for years to come.
