Meet The Robinsons Theatrical Review
The Gecko
I want to start by saying children will like this movie because of its color and fast moving scenery. However, as a movie, Disney has definitely lost it. The story line was good; hence, the two stars, but the design of the movie left a lot to be desired. If you took Nickelodeon, a Hanna Barbera villain, the game Mousetrap, and force-fed it to Rube Goldberg, he would regurgitate this movie.
The movie reminded me a lot of Jimmy Neutron from Nickelodeon, while the villain reminded me of Snidley Whiplash from Dudely Doright. As far as the vision of the future, if you ask a five year old to draw the future, you would get the same vision. Ridiculously designed scenes made the movie unbearable. The family he encounters in the future pretty much ruined the entire movie.
The movie did carry a heart-warming message about an orphan named Lewis who is trying to find a family willing to adopt him. He is a dreamer, a quality I wish more children had. It started out good with him trying to find a family, and entering in the science fair. His device is designed to retrieve deeply hidden memories, so he can remember his mother who gave him up for adoption. During the fair he is approached by Wilbur, a boy from the future who is looking for the man in the bola hat. The man in the bola is the villain, and he sabotages Lewis's experiment. Wilbur and Lewis end up traveling to the future.
During his encounter in the future, he is introduced to Wilbur's family. This entire section of the movie seemed to be a waste, as none of the characters in his family has any depth. There is no character for the audience to connect with. They were extremely flat and 2D. Its only purpose was to expose "who" Wilbur was, and the (dare I say) importance of a family.
There is an obvious twist in the movie regarding Wilbur and Lewis, and what seems to be a last minute script change to the villain. In the end, a paradox is prevented, and the future is put into perspective.
Animation wise the movie was good. The animation seems to flow well. From what I have read, Pixar took over this movie during the development, and you can see where it was hacked a lot. I can only imagine how bad it would be if Disney did it alone. I long for the days of the Disney classics.
